CANTON — St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies on Thursday charged Joseph J. Belile, 30, a St. Lawrence County jail inmate, with felony attempted assault and third-degree menacing, a misdemeanor.
Deputies said that on May 28, Mr. Belile was involved in an altercation with a corrections officer at the jail after he refused to follow a sergeant’s directions. Deputies said Mr. Belile resisted when the sergeant continued to try to get him to comply, and once he was restrained, he allegedly spit in the sergeant’s face.
He was returned to county jail Tuesday following a trial that ended in a hung jury. He was charged with felony second-degree assault after allegedly assaulting Timothy Thomas, another inmate in the jail, on Aug. 15. He is being held pending rescheduling of trial.
Mr. Belile is scheduled to answer Thursday’s charges in Town Court later this month, deputies said.
