Haggett disappointed by DCO coverage of school board races

To the Editor:

I write this on Tuesday, May 20; the day of the Massena Central School budget vote and school board elections. I am extremely disappointed in the complete lack of newspaper coverage of our contested school board seats in Massena by the Daily Courier-Observer. I can’t speak for my fellow candidates, but at least North Country This Week reached out and did a short interview with me weeks ago. I hope they gave the other candidates equal treatment.

Typically, the local papers would interview each candidate for any elective office (contested or not) prior to the election. That way, voters have some idea whether they agree or disagree with the candidates’ views. There were two positions on the board of education available and four candidates for those seats. It is unconscionable that any newspaper purporting to cover local news and issues would completely ignore a contested school board election!

I have always felt that the Courier-Observer has done a good job covering local issues including those involving Massena Central School. There may not be any big controversies or discord surrounding the schools now, but in my opinion, the DCO has really dropped the ball and done the public a disservice.
