WADDINGTON – Village trustees designated a committee Monday to focus on selling seven parcels of riverfront property.

Located along the St. Lawrence River, the seven parcels equal 5.02 acres. The parcels were sold back to the village in 2007 as surplus state lands in the 2003 relicensing agreement with the New York Power Authority.

The village board passed a resolution in January to allow North Country Management Ltd., Potsdam, to conduct appraisals of five parcels of land for $1,625 total, or $325 per appraisal.

“We are only appraising a few of them at this point in time,” Mayor Janet M. Otto-Cassada said Tuesday.

Mrs. Otto-Cassada said the company should begin appraising the land next week.

Headed by board members William Shoen and William E. Dashnaw, the committee appointed Monday will assess the appraisals and present the board with a number of profitable scenarios for the land.

“I have a particular interest in seeing if we can get this land back on the tax rolls,” Mr. Dashnaw said.

The committee will also explore several options, including public auction and private sale. Several adjacent landowners have already shown interest in purchasing the land, she said.

“Before we bring it before the board, we will notify the landowners to let them know when it will be discussed,” she said. “No one will be blindsided or left out of the decision.”

Mrs. Otto-Cassada is hoping to have the plans for the land finalized in the next 60 days.

“It’s a lot of work, and it’s nothing I can see forthcoming for at least another two months,” she said.
