Dr. Richard Selden Sanford, PhD, 87, husband of Carolyn Sue Sanford, and resident of Onancock, VA, formerly of Potsdam, NY, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2013 at Riverside Shore Rehabilitation Center in Parksley, VA.

Born December 11, 1926 in Springfield, MA he was a son of the late Selden B. Sanford and Florence Herman Sanford. Dr. Sanford served his country in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant in the Korean War. He later received his B.E.E. and M.E.E. degrees from Yale University and his PhD from Worchester Polytechnic Institute. After 3 years with Ratheon as a systems engineer, he became a professor of electrical engineering at Clarkson University where he would remain until retirement. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the West Potsdam Fire Department.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Sanford was predeceased by his son, Charles Sanford. Besides his wife, survivors include six children: David A. Sanford and wife Judi of Potsdam, NY, Suzanna O’Coineen of Dublin, Ireland, Robert M. Sanford and wife Robin of Gorham, ME, Liza Sanford-Crane and husband Henry of Elkton, MD, Jennifer A. Sanford of Rutland, VT, and Andrew B. Sanford and wife Lisa of Sherman Oaks, CA; a brother, John F. Sanford of Glenside, PA; nine grandchildren: Roisin O’Coineen Courtney and husband Roger, Aisling O’Coineen, Saoirse O’Coineen, Corey Sanford Yates and husband Dan, Daniel Sanford, Morgan Sanford, Charlotte Sanford-Crane, Hannah Sanford-Crane, and Isaac Sanford-Crane; two nieces; one nephew; his wife’s son, Christopher J. Garcia and wife Kentoya of Onancock and their children, Natlyn and Nathan.

Also left with his memory are Loramel P. Huwiler and Rosemary E. Hunter.

According to his wishes, there will be no funeral service.
