The Potsdam Central and Massena Central girls hockey teams both rallied to earn their 10th wins of the season on Wednesday.
Potsdam 5, Canton 3: At the Canton Pavilion, the Lady Sandstoners broke open a close game with three goals over the final 2:30 of the second period then held off a late surge by the Lady Bears to raise their overall record to 10-2.
Canton (3-8, 3-3) opened the scoring at 8:23 of the first period when Blake Orosz finished off a play set up by Mirna Husinec and Mary Kait Mace. Potsdam pulled even at the 11:41 mark after Jayden Young converted off an assisst from Sierra Gagnon and the teams went into the first intermission knotted at 1-1.
Kalie Grant sparked the decisive scoring outburst when she broke through for an unassisted goal with 2:26 left in the middle frame. Megan Plumb made it 3-1 just 24 seconds later assisted by Kelsey Green and Kirstin Barkley then fashioned the eventual game-winner with just eight seconds left in the middle frame off an assist from Green.
Canton battled back to within a goal with back-to-back goals late in the third period. Orosz netted an unassisted tally at the 9:32 mark before Taylor Marcellus cut the deficit to 4-3 two minutes later assisted by Mackenzie Comeau but Grant sealed the win for the Lady Sandstoners with her second unassisted goal of the game with 2:35 left in regulation.
Allie Compeau turned aside 15 of the shots she faced backstopping the win while Elizabeth Burke finished with 26 saves working the Canton crease.
Both teams will be back in action this evening with Potsdam facing St. Lawrence Central at the Tri-Town Arena starting at 7 p.m. and Canton traveling to Saranac Lake for a 6 p.m. contest.
Massena 4, St. Lawrence Central 2: At the Massena Arena, the visiting Lady Larries got off to a promising start with two early goals just 28 seconds apart before the Lady Raiders steadily worked their way back for the win.
Lydia Cosgrove opened the scoring for SLC with an unassisted goal 4:31 into the game. Hannah Gray made it 2-0 at the 4:59 mark assisted by Ashley DeBeer before Katie MacCuaig got the Lady Raiders on the board with an unassisted goal at 8:38 of the first.
Bailey Dillabough tied the game at 7:25 of the second period assisted by KC Herne before MacCuaig completed the comeback by completing her hattrick early in the final frame, finishing off a play set up by Carlie Leary and Abbie Paquin at the 2:58 mark then notching her second unassisted marker at 4:56.
Maddi Dillabough made 11 saves in the winning effort while Steph Peets stood tall handling 41 shots for SLC.
The Lady Raiders (10-4) are slated to play at Saranac Lake on Monday while the Lady Larries (0-9-1) host Potsdam tonight starting at 7 p.m.
Alexandria 2, Salmon River 1: At Tom Cavanaugh Arena, the host Lady Shamrocks struck first when Tewasherake Barnes finished off a play set up by Amber Thomas at 5:28 of the opening period but the Purple Ghosts rallied behind back-to-back unassisted goals by Jessica Prance with 2:09 left in the first period and 1:47 into the third to come away with the win.
Becca Leroux handled 37 shots working the Salmon River crease while Samantha Griswald logged 16 saves for the win.
The Lady Shamrocks (1-9-1, 1-3) are scheduled to play at Lake Placid on Monday.
