Area teams set to compete for Holiday Tournament honors

Area high school winter sports teams will be venturing near and far over the Holiday break to compete in tournaments.

The Massena Central girls hockey team will be hosting a tournament this Friday and Saturday at the Massena Arena. On Friday, the host Lady Raiders take on Bellows Free Academy of Vermont starting at 5 p.m. Potsdam Central then goes up against Williamsville East at 7:15 p.m. The teams switch opponents on Saturday with Massena facing Williamsville East at 11:30 a.m. and Potsdam squaring off against BFA at 1:45 p.m.

St. Regis Falls will be hosting the 6th annual Heather Provost Memorial Holiday Tournament starting on Friday with Parishville-Hopkinton taking on Tupper Lake at 4 p.m. and the SRF girls facing Norwood-Norfolk at 5:30 p.m. The tournament concludes on Saturday with the consolation at 4 p.m. and championhip at 5:30 p.m. Suggested donations at the door will be $2 for adults and $1 for students. Proceeds will go toward supporting the Saints Booster Club.

Both the Massena boys and girls basketball teams will be competing in their respective Section 7-10 challenges against Plattsburgh-arean teams later this week. The Raider boys travel to SUNY Plattsburgh on Thursday to take on AuSable Valley at 1 p.m. and will then go up against Saranac Central on Saturday at SUNY Potsdam’s Jerry Welsh Gym starting at 2:30 p.m.

The Lady Raiders, meanwhile, will be heading to Northeastern Clinton Central in Champlain to take on NCCS on Friday at 7 p.m. Franklin Academy will face Plattsburgh High in the first game of the challenge at 5:30 p.m. The teams trade opponents on Saturday back in Champlain with Massena taking on Plattsburgh at noon and FA matching up against NCCS at 1:30 p.m.

The Potsdam Central boys basketball team is also competing in the Section 7-10 Challenge. The Sandstoners take on Saranac Central in the final game Thursday at SUNY Plattsburgh starting at 7 p.m. then face Peru in their Saturday matchup at SUNY Potsdam starting at 1 p.m.

The St. Lawrence Central boys hockey and girls basketballs teams will be vying for tournament titles as well. The SLC skaters, having claimed top honors at its annual Christmas Tournament this past weekend, will go to Alexandria Bay for the Islanders Tournament starting on Friday against the host team at 6:30 p.m. The consolation and championship games are set for Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. The Lady Larries will be in action at the Cindy Brady Memorial Tournament in Heuvelton starting on Wednesday against the host Lady Bulldogs starting at 7:15 p.m. The Colton-Pierrepont girls take on Lisbon in the other first-round game on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. The consolation (3:45 p.m.) and championship (7:15 p.m.) games are Thursday.
